Subjects: Topic, Patters & Graphs, Math

For students of any age up to 2nd grade.

Activity Name: Creating Patterns and Graphs Age or Grade: K-2 Skills: Students will use geometric vocabulary and make a graph that involves counting and comparing skills and gain cooperative learning skills. Length of lesson: 15 mins. Review Time 15 mins. Main Objectives: This activity introduces children to topics in probability. It provides children with an opportunity to make connections among various areas of math. State Standards: MKG3.a Identify a missing shape within a given pattern of geometric shapes. MKG3.b Extend a given pattern, and recognize similarities in different patterns. Pre-Skills Software Title and Description: How to use pattern blocks? Students should know the geometric name and identify each of the shapes. PowerPoint on pattern blocks Triangle, square, parallelogram, parallelogram Evaluation With sharp angles, trapezoid and hexagon. Purpose Students will use the program to make patterns and to make connections among the different shapes. Purpose Students will be able to demonstrate how the shapes will fit together to repeat them selves. Materials PowerPoint on pattern blocks Pattern blocks Paper Pencil crayon Materials Students will construct AB, AABB, and ABC patterns using the computer. Computer with the game icon saved to the desk top. Activities-web site http://ejad.best.vwh.net/java/patterns/patterns_i.shtml Vocabulary review worksheet of the geometric shapes Students will read the instructions to learn how to play the game or instructions should be read and demonstrated by the teacher. Activities Use the computer to play the game. Students will be able to make a graph. Graph paper to make a graph Students will know What shapes can be use to create another shape. Identify geometric shapes Evaluation Students will create an AB, AABB, and an ABC pattern. Demonstrate how different shapes can be put together to repeat them self using the computer Evaluation Students graph they created Student’s ability to make or extend a pattern. *http://www.beaconlearningcenter.com/WebLessons/BrendasBedroom/default.htm#page5 *http://www.learner.org/teacherslab/math/patterns/buttons/buttonanswered.html
