Have the teachers log in to their laptops and access the internet via Internet Explorer.

Have the teachers go to http://del.icio.us/.

Demonstrating from a LCD projector, walk the teachers through the setup of a del.icio.us account.

Once each teacher has created their own del.icio.us account, demonstrate how to install the del.icio.us buttons.

Review with the teachers how to use the buttons just installed. Have them go to a website outside of del.icio.us and use the features offered via the buttons.

Review the Additional features of del.icio.us with the teachers.

Have the teachers go to the Settings page of del.icio.us and discuss the settings available for this application.

While demonstrating via the projector, have each teacher import their Favorites from Internet Explorer in to their del.icio.us account.

As a group, review the del.icio.us home page.

Point out features of the search like "saved by X people" and "related tags" area. Discuss what these mean to the person searching.

Complete In Class Assignment.

Discuss the outside of training assignment to be completed by the teacher.

In Class Assignment:

Using the search feature of del.icio.us, search for and explore sites on homework, its benefits, its drawbacks, and grade level appropriateness. As you are searching, note the tags related to your search. As a class, discuss which tag words were the same among the class members' searches. Next, discuss as a class, how assigning appropriate tags can help others when searching for information using social bookmarking resources like del.icio.us.

Outside Assignment:

Each teacher will use del.icio.us for a two week period. After that two week period, I will meet with each department individually and discuss how teachers in that department used del.icio.us. Those teachers who had their students set up their own del.icio.us account and use del.icio.us to complete a given assignment will share with the group the successes or pitfalls they encountered. Those teacher who chose to use del.icio.us as a professional tool will give examples of how they applied the use of del.icio.us to their lesson preparation and discuss their successes or pitfalls.

Assessment:

The assessment of this professional development lesson will be done once all departmental discussion sessions are complete. I will evaluate the information shared in each session. I should then be able to draw a conclusion on how well social bookmarking applications fit into our current high school curriculum.
