Show History

Subjects: Rock Cycle, Earth Science, Science, Rocks, Minerals

For students of 3rd to 3rd grade.

Objective: Students will identify igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks as they examine the stages of the rock cycle.

Materials: Rock & Mineral Samples, Flickr or Del.icio.us account, rock cycle organizer, paper pencils, student computer lab (for space)

Procedures: The teacher will model procedures on locating pictures of various rock types on the chosen Flickr or Del.icio.us website. The students will then pair up according to rock type (igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic), and fill in their organizers according to the characteristics of their rocks. Visuals from the Flickr images will assist in allowing students to record their observations of the various types of rock characteristics. If possible, have a sample of each type of rock or mineral to be observed on Flickr or Del.icio.us. After making their observations and recording the information, students will pick out the real rock and mineral samples.
The teacher will give the students ample time to explore rock images in their groups on Flickr or Del.icio.us website.

Closure: The students will come together with the teacher to share characteristics of each rock type as group presenters for the rest of the class. The students will also evaluate how useful or not so useful the Social Tagging website was in assisting them in locating their pictures to record their rock characteristics.
