TOPIC:    Japanese Koinobori Kites - Introduction

BROAD OUTCOME:    Students will research and examine the diverse celebrations held around the world in celebration of Children’s Day and become aware of the global problem of children’s circumstances. Specific focus will be directed on the Japanese cultural expression of Children’s Day and the traditional display of Koinobori Kites. Students will be required to conduct independent research on these themes as entries in their visual journals. The focus of the unit will be directed on the making of individual Koinobori windsock kites using student driven colour and design choice centred on 3 main themes: Australian, personalised and traditional. On completion of the Koinobori project, students will be offered an opportunity to display the kites within the school grounds for the celebration of Australia’s Children’s Week. Students will organise the curation of their display through working collaboratively with the class teacher and other school students.
Students will be able to:
1.	Demonstrate a general knowledge of Japanese culture and the tradition of Koinobori kites.  
2.	Gain an awareness of the significance of Children’s day and the global problem of children’s circumstances 
3.	Identify and communicate colour meanings, symbols and patterns through art making
1.		Experiment and develop confidence in the making of Japanese kites, the use of a range of mixed media, and design and pattern making techniques.
2.		Explore ideas and experiment with colour, design and materials 
3.		Create and display their kites to communicate the meaning of Children’s day to other students in the school
4.		Identify purposes and meanings of artworks Reflect on the effectiveness of mediums and chosen techniques

Students will be shown a PowerPoint on Japanese culture, Koinobori kites and Children’s Day.  This will be followed by a class discussion and question time to analyse the content and significance of issues raised in the presentation. Students will be given handouts including the outline of the task and information on research to be undertaken.

Body of Lesson

•		Teacher introduces task on Japanese culture, Koinobori kites and Children’s Day with assistance of PowerPoint presentation
•		Class reflection on film including questions:
1.		What is the significance of Koinobori kites?
2.		Why do other nations have Children’s Day?
3.		What are some of the issues/problems facing children around the world?
4.		Does Australia have a Children’s day and if so, why?
•		Teacher explains outline of task to students and gives hand-outs.
•	Teacher directed student focus
•		Students will affix hand-outs 1 -5 into visual diaries for reference throughout the Unit Plan
•		Lesson to focus on students experimentation with supplied template of fish scale designs x 4 using coloured pencils and referring to given images of examples
o	Assist students with general advice on design process and choice of colour palettes: traditional/personal/Australian conclusion	
•		Teacher lead class reflection and review
•		Clean up productively ensuring all materials are packed up and put away properly
