For students of 9th to 12th grade.


1. Students learn that a hurricane is a severe tropical storm that forms in the North Atlantic Ocean, the Northeast Pacific Ocean east of the dateline, or the South Pacific Ocean east. 

2. Hurricanes need warm tropical oceans, moisture and light winds above them. 

3. A hurricane can produce violent winds, incredible waves, torrential rains and floods. 

4. Hurricanes rotate in a counterclockwise direction around an "eye." 

5. A tropical storm becomes a hurricane when winds reach 74 mph. 

6. The hurricane season begins May 15 and ends November 30.

7. Students will be able to name other types of storms with hurricane like conditions.
