Social Tagging Lesson Plan

For students of 5th to 12th grade.

I did this lesson with 5th grade a couple of years ago. Art history, isn't one of my favorite art things to teach, but we have to in order to cover the standards. I had to search for a way to make it fun and exciting.  I came across this lesson plan called "Artist Bag."

                            Artist Bag
                               Grade 5 and Up
South Carolina Art Standard: Understanding the Visual Arts in Relation to History and Cultures

Materials:
White drawing paper 12"x18"
Black Sharpie Markers
Variety color Crayola Markers, crayons, color pencils
Pencils
Glue
Scissors
Pipe Cleaners or Jute Rope for the handle
Resource book on studied artists for each group or table
Access to the internet


Objective: Students will create an "artist in a bag."


                      Teacher Procedure:

1. Introduce  through use of multimedia, computer images, resource books artists for students to study.  I chose one artist for each group.

2. Have students look at the material, and write down 3 important facts that they have found out about the artist.

3. Have students select one work of art by the artist that they like the most.

4. Students must write one paragraph about the work of art,  describing why they like that particular piece.

5. Students will gather more interesting information, looking for things that would make an interesting bag.


***I provide students with the books and resources with lots of pictures since they are fifth graders instead of the "heavy duty" novels.  Once they have gotten enough information, they start designing the "bag" for the artist.


I demonstrate how to fold the paper and glue the sides in order to make a "bag", which is actually like a pouch.  

                Students:

A. Begin sketching their ideas on the front and back of the bag.

B. We talk about filling the space with things only about the artist they worked on.

C. They may re-create images created by the artist as a way to make their "artist in a bag" project more realistic-like.

D. Students are to use the black sharpie marker and outline all of their images, text and other info they have included about the artist.

E. Next, they may use the equipment provided and color the bag.

F. The name of the artist has to be the largetst text on the bag for emphasis.

G. The pipe cleaner or jute rope can be used for the handle of the bag.  

They look very nice once displayed, and can be hung from the ceiling, on a bulletin board, or on your cabinets in the art room.
I think that it is a good resource that relates to artists, and as the year goes on, you can give extra credit to a student who would make a bag on other artists that you study throughout the year. 


 Before you know it, you will have a large "student" created resource on artists of study in your particular curriculum.  The terms would be written on their level, and make learning about them much more fun.
Of course, the actual resources should always be introduced along with the student created art.
