Introduction to fibre and construction techniques.

For students of 8th to 10th grade.

Title: Introduction to fibre and construction techniques

Content Elaborations: 10.6.1, 10.6.2, 10.6.3, 10.7.1, 10.7.2, 10.7.3, 10.7.4

Description: Students will be exposed to the basic fibre and construction technique of coiling use within Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Students will then be equip with a new sculptural technique for future work.

Time Allocation: 120 minutes (or equivalent to a double lesson)

Materials Required: 
- Bale of meadow hay or dried flax (or similar, such as pea-straw)
- Darning needles
- Scissors
- Yarn 
- PowerPoint presentation of coiled basketry
- Hand outs featuring demonstrations for the task (sketch and description)
-(Optional) YouTube demonstrations of coiling

Method:
- Begin by asking students about what they think coiling is, what is it used for, and by whom?
(allow 10 minutes for answers)
- Introduce fiber and construction techniques with the aid of a visual PowerPoint, showing images of traditional and contemporary adaptions of coiling techniques in basketry. (Note: Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander techniques of both traditional and contemporary practices)
- Demonstrate simple coiling technique, gathering small bundle of hay and wrapping the end of the strands in yarn. Using your darning needle, thread the yarn so that the wrapped end coils back in on itself like a spiral. Continue stitching around the coil, adding more hay when required - Growing the spiral outwards into the size of a coaster. 
- Ensure students have materials required, including a hand out demonstrating coiling.
- Allow students to experiment with this coiling technique, as well as developing their own stitching style for creating a coiled object. 
- Allow 10 minutes for clearing away materials.
