Research: Using Online Resources to Gather Information

For students of 4th to 5th grade.

Standard:  

ELA4W1 The student produces writing that establishes an appropriate organizational 
structure, sets a context and engages the reader, maintains a coherent focus throughout, 
and signals a satisfying closure.

Materials:

Computer with Internet Connection, Writing Idea Webs

Procedure:  

1.  Students will brainstorm a topic and choose questions that answer
who, what, when, and where issues about their topic.  (For example, if student chooses
topic "Egyptian Pyramids," one question that student devises could be "when were the
Egyptian Pyramids built?)"  

2.  After student has written all questions about their topic 
they will begin using online resources to gather information and answer their questions.
Students will use, but will not be limited to, the following online search engines:
Nettrekker.com, yahooligans.com, and askjeevesforkids.com.  

3.  Students will bookmark their found information through del.icio.us.  This will allow 
the student to access all material at home, school or at public library.


Closing:  

Students will use all information gathered to produce an informational
report.  This report will remain in student portfolio as an artifact of student
writing.
