Note recognition, rhythm class by Sebastian Angus

Task 1: 
Students will learn to read and recognize the rhythm of certain notes that include whole notes (semibreves), half notes (minims), quarter notes (crotchets) and eighth notes (quavers). The focus initially will be on the American terms for the notes covered (whole notes etc...), this is because they are fractions of which all should already be familiar at a secondary level of education. 

Each note and its corresponding rest will be introduced one by one, starting with a whole note and its corresponding rest, a whole note rest. Once all the notes have been introduced, half the students are given the note and rest values on a piece of paper, the other half will be responsible for clapping the rhythm. Through a series of permutations being clapped the students will gain the knowledge to recognise how the notes are read and also its value (how many beats).  The groups shall swap over; the clappers have the responsibility of holding up the notes and creating permutations, the note holders become the clappers.

Once both groups have the comprehension to read the notes each group shall be given the opportunity to create their own rhythms by assembling the notes as they see fit, whilst the other must attempt to clap them.  Alternatively a group can elect one person at a time from the other group. Every group member from both groups will then have to attempt to play it. If there are no mistakes then the team will be elected a point, if a person makes a mistake they lose their point. The group with the most points wins.

Time allocation:
10-30mins approx

Points for consideration:
•	There could be up to 4 groups per class
•	If students are struggling every possible permutation should    be covered
•	If students aren’t comfortable clapping on their own, groups are advised
•	The more notes included in the session means that a longer time allocation is needed

Identifying melodic notes in Treble Clef
Task 2:
Students will learn how to identify and understand melodic notes on the treble staff. This will then be applied to major scales (Hand out)

Points for consideration:
•	Students with prior knowledge on a melodic instrument may already be familiar with the content. So be prepared with extra content to meet their needs, just in case.
•	Ensure all students understand how to read the notes by walking around the class after work on the handout has been set. DO NOT single them out in front of fellow students.
